What grade boundaries mean in IGCSE maths
Grade boundaries are the minimum marks needed for each grade. Boards set them after every exam series once papers are marked, based on how hard the papers were. This keeps a grade meaning the same standard each session. Edexcel and Cambridge use different grade scales, so their boundaries are separate. For a fuller explanation of how boards decide these thresholds, see our guide to GCSE maths grade boundaries explained.

How many marks do you need for each grade in Cambridge IGCSE maths (0580)?

Edexcel tiers and Cambridge tiers explained
Edexcel 4MA1 has two tiers: Foundation covers grades 5 to 1 and Higher covers grades 9 to 3. The same grade needs a different number of marks on each tier. Cambridge 0580 also has two tiers: Core covers grades G to C and Extended covers grades E to A*. The Core papers are marked out of a lower total than Extended. Students sit one tier, chosen by their school based on target grade. To see how the papers, timing and marks are structured, read our guide to the GCSE maths exam structure. The topics themselves are largely shared across boards; see the full GCSE maths topics list, which overlaps closely with IGCSE. For the board-by-board breakdown, see our IGCSE maths topics list for Edexcel 4MA1 and Cambridge 0580.
Why do IGCSE maths grade boundaries change every session?
Boundaries are set after each exam series, not before. If a paper is harder than usual, the boundaries are lowered so students are not penalised, and if it is easier they rise. This is why a previous session's marks are only a guide. Edexcel also runs a November series as well as June, and each series has its own boundaries.
When are IGCSE maths grade boundaries released?
Each board publishes its final grade boundaries on results day for that exam series. This page is updated with each new series once the official figures are out.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are grade boundaries in IGCSE Maths?
Grade boundaries are the minimum marks you need to reach each grade in an exam. For example, the mark required for a grade 9 is set for every paper and every session. The exam board decides these thresholds after the papers have been marked.
What mark do I need for a grade 9 in Edexcel IGCSE Maths (4MA1)?
The mark needed for a grade 9 in Edexcel IGCSE Maths (4MA1) is set by Pearson after each exam series, so it changes from one session to the next and there is no single fixed mark. Use the table above to see the grade 9 mark for each session listed, and always confirm the exact figure for your session from the official source.
Does Cambridge IGCSE Maths (0580) use 9 to 1 or A* to G?
Cambridge IGCSE Maths (0580) is graded A* to G, not the 9 to 1 scale used by UK GCSE and by Edexcel International GCSE (4MA1). Extended tier targets grades A* to E, and Core tier targets grades C to G.
Do Edexcel IGCSE Maths grade boundaries change each session?
Yes. Pearson sets 4MA1 boundaries after each exam series based on how demanding the papers were, so the mark for each grade shifts between the June and November sessions and from year to year. Treat past boundaries as a revision guide, not a guaranteed threshold.
Do IGCSE Maths grade boundaries change every year?
Yes. Boundaries are set after each exam session based on how demanding that paper was, so the mark needed for a given grade shifts slightly from one session to the next. Past boundaries are a useful revision target, but never a guaranteed threshold.
Where can I find official IGCSE Maths grade boundaries?
Official boundaries are published by the exam boards on results day. Pearson publishes Edexcel IGCSE Maths (4MA1) boundaries and Cambridge publishes IGCSE Maths (0580) boundaries on their websites. Always confirm against the official source for your exact paper and session.
How many marks do you need to pass Edexcel IGCSE maths (4MA1)?
A grade 4 is a standard pass. The exact mark changes each session, so check the tables above for the latest figures.
Are Edexcel and Cambridge IGCSE maths grade boundaries the same?
No. They are different boards with different grade scales, so their boundaries are set separately. Edexcel 4MA1 uses grades 9 to 1 and Cambridge 0580 uses A* to G.
When are IGCSE maths grade boundaries published?
On results day for each exam series, when the board releases results.
